Bassfield store owner wounded during alleged robbery; assailant shot 11 times

The owner of the Get ‘n Go convenience store in Bassfield, Wael Nagi, was shot during an alleged robbery late Wednesday night, according to a Sherrif’s Department report.
The suspect, LaRobert Young, 34, of 29 McLeod Lane in Bassfield, was pronounced dead at the scene by AAA Ambulance EMT’s.
The Sheriff’s Department received a call just after 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday night that an employee of the Get ‘n Go store on Highway 42 had been shot.
According to Sheriff Ron Strickland, Nagi was closing the store when Young pulled a gun on him. The alleged motive was robbery. Two handguns were found on the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Department report: a Glock 31 .357 believed to belong to Young and a Glock 17 .9MM believed to belong to Nagi.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrived to take over the investigation at the scene.
Nagi was transported by AAA Ambulance to the helicopter landing zone at Ward’s and taken via LifeFlight to Forrest General Hospital for surgery. According to the Sheriff’s Department report, he is recovering.
Coroner Jimmy Slater confirmed the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and that bullet fragments were recovered from 11 entry wounds in Young’s body.
An autopsy will be performed and evidence submitted to the MS Crime Lab. The case will then be turned over to the District Attorney.
