Charles Lavelle (Nub) Johnson, Sr.

Funeral services were held December 28, 2013, at St. Paul MB Church, Bassfield, for Mr. Charles Lavelle (Nub) Johnson, Sr., age 70, who died December 22, at his residence. Rev. Henry Kelly officiated with interment following in the Wheeler Cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Chales Johnson was born to Paul Applewhite and Lovie Grubbs.

He was preceded in death by brother, Leroy McLeod and two sisters, Adrian Harriel and Shirley Joyce Johnson.

He graduated from Carver High School. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a landscaper for many years and was a volunteer firefighter for Bassfield Fire Department. He was employed by Jefferson Davis County Maintenance Department.

He enjoyed farming, hunting and the great outdoors.

Mr. Johnson joined St. Paul MB Church at an early age and remained until his death.

He is survived by mother, Lovie Grubbs of Hattiesburg; father, Paul Applewhite of Chicago, IL; two sons, Kenny (Felicia) Johnson of Hattiesburg, Chales L.(Brittany) Johnson, Jr. of Loganville, GA; 11 sisters, Dorothy Hayes of Collins, Gwendolyn Doyle of Slidell, LA, Ida (Harvey) Ellis of Chicago, IL, Cassie (Francis) Augustine of Rialto, CA, Diane Reese, Debra Williams, Gayle (Thomas) Evans, Shelia (James) Reese, Felicia (Burlyn) Reese and Jackie Applewhite all of Bassfield, Heather White of Hattiesburg; one brother, Rev. Jonathan (Laventrice) Grubbs of Chicago, IL; six grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mary McLeod of Moss Point; special friend, Alberta Mikell of Columbia; many other relatives and friends.
