Hwy 35 & Granby accident takes life

A young life was taken early Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Highway 35 and Granby Road.

Jake McRaney, 19, of Bassfield was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident from blunt force trauma, according to Jeff Davis County Deputy Coronor Kathy Stephens.

Reports from the MS Highway Patrol confirm McRaney was driving West on Granby Road at approximately 6:30 a.m. Monday when his vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a Ford F350 traveling south on Highway 35 driven by Daniel Sumrall, Jr. of Ovett, MS.

McRaney was ejected from the vehicle upon impact. Soon after the collision and ejection of the driver, the vehicle was engulfed in fire and totally destroyed.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol, Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office, Bassfield Fire Department, Granby Fire Department and two wreckers were at the accident scene.

An autopsy is being conducted by the medical examiners office in Jackson.
