On May 13, 2014, the Jefferson Davis Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call from three-year-old D’Avonte Sands.

Katherine Sands, 44, the grandmother of young Sands became ill when her blood pressure dropped to 42/31.

While on the phone trying to get help for his grandmother, the dispatcher thought that little D’Avonte was playing on the phone and hung up. He called the Sheriff’s Department again trying to get them to send help.

D’Avonte told the dispatcher to send the police and that his grandmother needed the ambulance. Katherine was not able to speak; her life was in the hands of her grandson.

“God used my grandson to get me some help and without him being home with me that day I could have died. I thank God for him,” she told the Headlight staff.

Katherine said everyone should teach their children to dial 911 and to learn important information in the event of an emergency.

“Teach them their address, phone number and treasure your life,” Katherine said

“God comes to us in all shapes, size, and colors, big and small. All I could say is thank you God for being you and for my little hero an angle in the midst of us. God bless our children,” she added.911 WEB
