The Prentiss Library Summer Reading Program is anything but dull. South Mississippi Regional Library System’s children’s librarian Ryda Worthy and her assistants have a knack for making each session informative, fun-filled and learning oriented.

“Fizz, Boom, Read” is oriented to the science technology, engineering and math skills taught in public school settings,’ states Worthy. “The kids focus on reading and learning by doing simple science experiments. It’s science with fun.”

Some of the projects with a lesson have been tornado in a bottle, making ice cream, and building weight-bearing bridges, making lava lamps and slime and creating a marble-run. Projects to come include tie-dye T-shirts and the ever-popular last meeting in June the Splash-Down.

There is still time for your children to be involved in fun learning experiences that are provided by library funds, community donations and grants from the Wal-Mart Foundation.

Kids do not have to have registered or been involved in every session to come and enjoy each weekly meeting but they will receive great benefit from attending every one possible.

Meeting times are Bassfield Library 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Prentiss Library 2 p.m. on Thursdays. The last week in June will be “Splash-Down” time so bring towels and wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet.

“This is technology based fun but with no batteries or power cords necessary,” states Worthy.

Special news is that Worthy states a LEGO Club is in the making where kids of any age can come to the library, design LEGO creations and have them posted on the library’s website. This will be a once a month multi-generational project where families can even work together with the children. Worthy states that any donation of LEGOs, large or small, to this project would be greatly appreciated. There will be more information on this project forthcoming.
