Funeral services were held Saturday, November 8, 2014, at Green Grove MB Church for Mr. Johnnie (John) Franklin Newton, age 71, who died Wednesday, November 5, at Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg. Rev. Timothy Rush officiated with interment following in the church cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. John Newton was born to the late Everless and Hilda Newton in Prentiss. He was a member of Green Grove MB Church. He served as Worship Master of Mt. Zion Lodge for several years. He held several credentials and was a prominent member in the community until his illness.

He was preceded in death by his sister Debbie Johnson and brother Elester Newton.

He is survived by two sons, Juan (Carol) Newton of Hazlehurst and Kevin McNair of Magee; one daughter, Cortless McNair of Magee; sisters, Charlene Barnes of Gulfport, Shirley Ann Newton of Louisville, KY, Mary M. Myers and Betty L. Newton, both of Prentiss, and Pamela Newton of Gulfport; many other relatives and friends.
