Leo Lewis, Sr.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 15, 2014, at Pearl River Valley MB Church in Monticello,for Mr. Leo Lewis, Sr., age 81, who died Sunday, November 9, at Lawrence County Nursing Center, Monticello. Rev. Michael Graves officiated with interment following in the church cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Leo Lewis, Sr. was born to the late Carsie and Willie Mae Lewis in Monticello. He attended McCullough High School. At an early age he united with Pearl River Baptist Church and remained a member until his death.

He was married to Gloria Faye Evans and to this union four children were born.

Mr. Lewis was employed at Illinois Central Railroad for a number of years and Lawrence County ATF. He also owned and operated Leo’s Cleaning Service. He joined the Monticello Police Department in 1974 and retried in 1997 as a police officer.

He was preceded in death by one son, Cecil G. Lewis; one sister, Mary McLaurin; and one brother, Carsie Lewis, Jr.

His survivors are wife, Gloria Evans Lewis; four sons, Mitchell (Kathryn) Lewis and Marvin (Charlotte) Lewis both of Silver Creek, Leo Lewis, Jr. of Monticello, Derrick Smith of Chicago, IL; one daughter, Shirley Ann Brown of Oakland, CA; one sister, Wallace Ruth (McArthur) Amos of Brandon; two brothers, George (Angela) McLaurin of Brandon and Joe McLaurin of Las Vegas, NV; one uncle, Isaac Slay of Salina, KS; one aunt, Rose Lee Barnes of Foxworth; 21 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; special cousin, Buddy; confidant, Ruby Slay Sutton; many other relatives and friends.
