Mrs. Willie Mae Thompson Laird, age 90, died Monday evening, December 29, 2014, at the Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. Services for Mrs. Laird were held on Saturday, January 3, at Mt. Zion MB Church with Pastor Ozell White officiating. Interment was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Laird Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Laird was the daughter of the late Willie and Lizzie Thompson of Brooklyn, MS. At an early age she joined the Oak Grove Church and remained a member until she married and united with the Mt. Zion MB Church. Mrs. Laird served her Lord and Church as a member of the Home Mission, usher board, senior choir and benevolent fund treasurer.

Mrs. Laird married the late J. C. Laird of Prentiss, and to this union six children were born, one of whom preceded her in death. Mrs. Laird was a working woman, in addition to being an outstanding wife and mother, with jobs at Magnetek, Millcreek, and as a part-time caregiver. In addition to caring for her family, Mrs. Laird was an outstanding servant of the community serving in the Eureka Arts Club, NAACP, and Heroine of Jericho.

Mrs. Laird’s survivors include five children, Ruby (Earnest) Harper, Alice Faye Laird, A. Lucille Laird, Arlena (George) Funches, and Glenda (Terry) Walker, all of Prentiss; siblings, Earlie (Beatrice) Thompson, Lillie Mae Carstafhnur, Mary Nell (Matthew) Nobles, James Henry Thompson, all of McComb, Carolyn Overton, Sandra Faye Russell and Dennie Thompson, all of Dallas, TX; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and other relatives.
