Funeral services were held Saturday, January 10, 2015, at Mt. Carmel MB Church for Mrs. Mattie Mae Ross, 96, who died Monday, January 5, at Jeff Davis Community Hospital, Prentiss. Rev. Dampeer officiated with interment following in the Prentiss First Baptist Church Cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mattie Mae Ross was born to Willie and Arvella Hall in Prentiss, MS. She received her formal education at Cedar Grove School and received further education at Prentiss Institute. She joined Mt. Zion MB Church at an early age and remained a member until her health failed.

She was married to the late A.D. Ross and to this union 11 children were born. She was employed at Collinswood and Coulter’s Cleaners until her retirement.

She is survived by Augustine (Lee Mar) McInnis, Elva Jean Ross, Katie M. (James) Barnes, Nellie (Leon) Anderson all of Prentiss, Texana Nunnery of Summit, Edward Ross of Cary, Luddie (Penny) Ross, Donald Ross of Bassfield, M.C. Ross of Gulfport, Richard (Tamar) Ross of Prentiss; children she raised, Antonio Payne, Fredrick Payne, Jocelyn Payne, Alice Payne, Donald Payne and Paul Thorn; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and special friend, Lula Mae Bass.
