Entertainment for the 32nd annual Run for the Roses will be 55 South, a band featuring Prentiss’ own Mark Offutt. The band will perform at the Longleaf Trace Park beginning around 9 a.m.
According to their Facebook page, 55 South is a mixed genre band combining old and new country, southern and classic rock, popular standards, and originals.
Band members include: Charles Cunningham – lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Shane Beard – drums/vox, Mark Offutt – bass guitar, Curtis Patrick – guitar, John Chisolm – guitar. The band is based out of Hazlehurst, MS.
Interstate 55 runs through Central United States from LaPlace, LA, to Chicago, IL. It consists of remnants of the former Route 66. The road witnesses the best of the South: Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas. This vital roadway has seen it all – good and bad.
55 South, the band, is very much like its namesake in many ways. It is formed of remnants, former members of bands no longer on the circuit; bands that have opened for the likes of Brantley Gilbert, Jake Owens, Mark Chestnutt, just to name a few; bands who at one time represented the music culture of the South. It is members coming together for a common love and passion, which is imbedded deep in their own hearts and souls – music. Through experience and drive, they too have seen it all, good and bad.
55 South, like the roadway, is traveling a division between heart-pounding rock & roll and the popular songs that we all love, all the while staying ‘central’ in their country roots.
55 South blends a strong mix of Country music, new and old, with the classic sound of Southern Rock. Mix in a touch of 80’s rock, and dance standards, and a good bit of their own original music as well, and you have 55 South.
The 5K Run/walk will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the one-mile race and the 1/4-mile pre-school run.
Other events scheduled that day include that Longleaf Trace Arts & Crafts Market as well as numerous food vendors.
