Mrs. Elizabeth Martin, 85, died Monday morning November 2, 2015, at her home in rural Jefferson Davis County. Services for Mrs. Martin were held on Saturday November 7, 2015, at the Sweet Water C.M.E. Church, with Pastor Nathaniel Lias and former Pastor Earnest Thompson officiating. Interment was in the Sweet Water Cemetery, with Laird Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Martin was the fourth child of eight children born to the late Edgar Hawthorne and the late Rosetta Hawthorne of rural Jefferson Davis County. At an early age, she joined the Mt. Zion M. B. Church and remained a member until she united with the Sweet Water Church, where she served as an active member until her death.
Mrs. Martin was united in holy matrimony with the late Gulf Martin and to this union ten children were born, two of whom preceded her in death. In addition to being an outstanding mother to her children, (and many others in the community), she was well known for her sensational cooking.
Mrs. Martin’s survivors include three sons, Gulf (Sheila) Martin of Bassfield, Lester (Loretta) Martin of Florida, and Bobby Lee Martin of Prentiss; five daughters, Mary (Hugh) Lee of Bassfield, Roberta (James) Ball, Alice (Bruce) Graves, Betty Durr, all of Prentiss, and Senterdia (Kenneth) Logan of Jackson; thirty grandchildren; sixty-one great grandchildren; and ten great great grandchildren.
