Leon “Bokie” Herring

Mr. Leon “Bokie” Herring, 46, died Thursday morning March 17, 2016, at his home in rural Jefferson Davis County. Services for Mr. Herring were held on Saturday March 26,2016, at New Jerusalem Apostolic Church in Bassfield, with Elder Melvin Hudson officiating. Interment was in the Wheeler Cemetery in Bassfield, with Laird Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Herring was the son of the late Jimmy Morrison and Leona Herring Smith in New Orleans, LA.
At an early age, he joined the New Jerusalem Apostolic Church and remained a member until his death. Mr. Herring attended Bassfield High School, and worked at Sanderson Farms for a number of years until his health failed. In additon to his other skills, Mr. Herring was an excellent chef, and loved to cook around the clock for anyone and any occasion.
Mr. Herring survivors include his mother, Leona Smith of Bassfield; one brother, Issac Herring of Bassfield; three sisters, Deborah Herring of Carson, Donna Herring and Sharita Herring, both of Bassfield; two uncles, Leon Batimon of Bassfield and Larry Eaton of Kountze, TX; four aunts Evelyn (Reggie) Hooker of Prentiss, Esther Herring of Gulfport, Rose Price and Mary Dawson, both of Bassfield; seven nieces; nine nephews; and a number of other relatives and friends.
