A special discount is being offered again this year to all students, parents, guardians, and employees of the Jeff Davis County School District, Prentiss Christian School and surrounding schools who register for the Run for the Roses by Friday, April 1.
“Proceeds from the Run for the Roses are used to provide college scholarships each year, so it is very important that we have good participation,” said Tracy Waits.
“An individual registration is just $10 for those employed by the schools. The more people of one family who register, the discount grows. For example: a family of three can register for $25 and a family of four for only $30,” she added.
Walking team registration for school personnel is $50.
All pre-registered participants will receive a Run for the Roses t-shirt and refreshments on race day.
“The race-day registration price is $25 per person, said Waits, and there are no exceptions, so the $10 pre-registration offer is a really good deal.”
Race committee members have delivered forms to each school and encourage everyone to participate.
The school with the most participants will be recognized during the awards ceremony on April 9.
The 5K begins at 8 a.m., with the one mile and preschool quarter mile to follow.
Entertainment for the 33rd annual Run for the Roses will, once again, be 55 South, a band featuring Prentiss’ own Mark Offutt. The band will perform at the Longleaf Trace Park beginning around 9 a.m.
“We had a ball playing for Prentiss at last year’s run, so we were really gassed at the invite to come play again,” Offutt said.
The band blends a strong mix of Country music, new and old, with the classic sound of Southern Rock. Mix in a touch of 80’s rock, and dance standards, and a good bit of their own original music as well, and you have 55 South.
Band members include: Charles Cunningham – lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Shane Beard – drums/vox, Mark Offutt – bass guitar, Curtis Patrick – guitar, John Chisolm – guitar. The band is based out of Hazlehurst, MS.
The 5K Run/walk will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the one-mile race and the 1/4-mile pre-school run.
Several churches in the community will be in the park with food and craft items for sale.
Registration forms are available at Prentiss City Hall, M.L. Arrington Fitness Center, The Prentiss Headlight, and on the web at www.runfortheroses5k.com. You can also find one at the bottom of this page.
