Jefferson Davis County now has an official website. The site went live Tuesday morning and will provide many services to the county. The site contains information and contact numbers for all elected officials, fire departments, county offices, etc.

A U.S. Next representative presented the website to the Board of Supervisors for approval at their bi-monthly meeting Monday.

The site includes a page for new residents, links to utilities, links for local attractions, photos of landmarks, a “How do I” page, and a business start up and assistance page, among others.

Many useful links, forms, information on county schools, Jeff Davis Lake, and local events are  also included on the website.

Citizens now have the availability to pay court fines and tickets, and renew  driver’s licenses through the site. In the future, it will be possible to pay property taxes on line as well as renew car tags.

The county is still in the process of adding information and working with site officials to assure all pertinent data is included.

After approving the agenda, the board moved on to the discussion of the county rubbish pit.

The board estimates approximately 80 feet left of land available at the pit. “We have dug through our buffer zone. We need a plan,” said Board President Corky Holliman.

One of the options the board discussed was to apply for a permit to dig 50 feet out of the buffer zone if the landowner agrees. The land surrounding the rubbish pit is owned by Plum Creek. The county is in negotiations currently with Plum Creek in order to acquire the needed land.

Another option is hauling dirt into the pit. Dirt would have to be brought in every two weeks to totally cover the rubbish a minimum of six inches.

That creates more problems regarding where to obtain the dirt and what the financial impact would be.

Renting roll-off dumpsters is a third possible solution. The company hired, delivers the dumpsters, and when full, hauls the rubbish to their landfill.

These options were taken under advisement and a solution will be finalized at a later date.

County Engineer Les Dungan opened bids for sealing roads and short sections of roads on state aid road and bridge sites throughout the county. Vance Brothers was awarded the contract and work will begin in approximately six weeks.

Roads receiving maintenance will be Jack Loftin, Old Highway 13 South, J.E. Johnson Avenue, East St. Stephens, McPhail and Mt. Carmel Roads.

The Board voted to begin participating in E-Verify. E-Verify is an internet-based system that allows businesses to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.

E-Verify compares information from an employee’s Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, to data from U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration records to confirm employment eligibility.
