Hal “Moochie” Speights is the new alderman for the Town of Prentiss. Speights was elected to the  position in a run-off  Tuesday against Rudolph “Rudy” McNease. Speights received 79 votes to McNease’s 78. A total of 157 votes were cast of the 693 registered voters in the city limits.

This was a special called election to fill the vacancy left on the board after the unexpected death of Prentiss alderman Todd Broome.

Both candidates failed to get the required 50 percent plus one vote needed to prevent a run-off in the first election held Jan. 10.

In that election, McNease received 70 votes, Speights received 45.

Speights will serve on the board for four months, finishing out the four-year term.

The regular municipal election will be held in June. Anyone interested in running for mayor or alderman may pick up a qualifying packet at Prentiss City Hall.

Candidates are required to collect 50 signatures of citizens living inside the city limits.

“Signatures must match those on the voter roll. All signatures will be verified,” said town clerk Missy Jones.

Deadline for submitting qualifying packets is March 3 at 5 p.m.
