Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at Prentiss First Missionary Baptist Church for Mrs. Wyvette Polk, 89, who died Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, at Dallas Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas, Texas. Rev. Ronnie Barnes, pastor, officiated with interment following in the Griffith Cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wyvette Polk, aka Tee’, was born in Prentiss, to the late Uriel S. and Beulah Polk. She was  child 14 of 18 children. She received her high school education from Prentiss Institute in 1947, her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Alcorn State University in 1954 and her master’s degree in 1960. She also completed coursework at the University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey College.

Mrs. Polk chose teaching as her career and taught in Tylertown City School System and the Brookhaven Municipal School System. She moved back home in 1966 to care for her father after her mother passed. She resumed teaching at J. E. Johnson and later at Prentiss Elementary School where she retired after 38 years accredited to her educational career. She was a member of Prentiss First Missionary Baptist Church where she served in the following capacities; financial secretary, president of the usher mission, secretary of the Home Mission Society, choir and president of the Dining Mission.

She was a member of the General Baptist Women’s Association, National Education Association, Mississippi Education Association, Jefferson Davis County Association of Educators, Eureka Arts Club and the Heroines of Jericho.

She is survived by her brother, James (Delores) Polk of Cleveland, Ohio; sister-in-law, Louise Polk of Prentiss; and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
