Monthly school board meeting held Monday

A reception was held Monday prior to the monthly school board meeting honoring those retiring from the Jefferson Davis County School District. Those honored were Patricia Becton, Herdie Booth, William Jones, Michael Lofton and Patricia Thompson.

Each retiree was also presented a certificate at the beginning of the board meeting.

During the superintendent’s report, Will Russell spoke to the crowd about the celebration of life for Zack Sandifer that was held at J.E. Johnson Saturday.

“I would like to publicly thank each and every one that worked so that Saturday was possible for Christine Lewis and her family,” said Russell. “Each year in the month of May we have a field day at J.E. Johnson. I would like to name the field day  “Zackery’s Day,” he added.

Athletic director and head football coach Lance Mancuso gave a report on the football and basketball camps that were held last week.

“We had a great turnout for our first camp. Approximately 40 campers attended the basketball camp and around 25 participated at the football camp,” he said.

Many forms of technology are being upgraded this summer at all three schools. The computer lab at Jefferson Davis County High School is being expanded for the higher number of students using that campus in the next school year.

Intercom systems at all three campuses are being upgraded, as is the surveillance systems.

Hal Daley, of Carson, won a bid to handle a portion of the renovations at all three campuses.
