A $2,000 reward is being offered by the Jefferson Davis County Board of Supervisors after the tax assessor’s office was burglarized early Monday morning.

Office workers relized something wasn’t quite right after arriving at work around 8 a.m.

“I walked in and noticed a vent was pulled off the wall,” said Kristi Hartzog Lee. “I also saw a door open that is usually closed, and a desk drawer open. I immediately turned around and walked back out.”

Over $2,700 cash was taken out of the office in the robbery consisting of daily start-up money and two tag payments taken in late last Friday afternoon.

Video surveillance inside the office shows the perpetrators entered the office around 3:29 a.m. and left at 5:01 a.m. after pushing a floor safe out the front door in an office chair.

They can be seen on video searching all desk drawers and cabinets and even prying their way into the JDC Chamber Partnership office.

The incident is under investigation by the Prentiss Police Department.

“I am very thankful that we were not at work, and no one got hurt, said Tax Assessor and Collector Kelley Ross Brown.

“Whoever did this, you will be caught. You have taken the citizens’ money, not ours”

“To my knowledge, this is the first ever incident like this at the tax assessor’s office.”

The reward offered by the supervisors is for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons involved in the breaking and entering of the tax assessor’s office.

“We are currently taking measures to increase the security to our county on buildings, said Supervisor Bobby Rushing.

“The safety of our county’s citzens and the protection of their assets and property is of upmost importance to us.”
