Funeral services were held Saturday, March 10, 2018, at St. Paul M. B. Church in Bassfield for Mr. Spencer “Buddy Boy” Thompson, 96, who died Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at his residence.  Rev. Eddie Cole Sr. officiated with interment following in the Progress M. B. Church Cemetery in Bassfield.  Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Spencer Thompson was born to the late Scott Thompson and Ella P. Dean. Brother Thompson married Era Mae Carter and to this union one daughter was born.

Mr. Thompson attended school at Rosenwald and Prentiss Institute before being drafted in to the United States Army in 1942. During his services in World War II in Germany, he was rescued by a squadron Red Tails (Tuskegee Airman). He received an honorable discharge in 1946.  Mr. Thompson relocated to Chicago after moving home to Mississippi after his service in the U.S. Army.  He worked at American Can Company.

He later married Annie L. McBride.  He retired from American Can and moved back to Mississippi in 1973. He worked for MDOT in Hattiesburg and later drove a school bus for Jefferson Davis County school system.

He was a member at St. Paul M. B. Church where he served as president of ushers and brotherhood.

Mr. Thompson is survived by two children, James (Linda) Wilson of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Vera L. Carter of Bassfield; special friend, Hester Easterling; special niece, Cindy Thompson and Versie Lee Thompson all of Bassfield and Charles Thompson of Chicago, Illinois; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends and special great grandchild, Richard Perry II.
