Demetrius M. Thompson

Funeral services for Mr. Demetrius M. Thompson, 40, Decatur, and formerly of Bassfield, were held on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Bassfield Pentecostal Apostolic Church, Bassfield. Burial was in the Reese Cemetery in Bassfield. Pastor Anna Keys officiated the services. Reeves Funeral Home, Inc., Mount Olive, was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Thompson died at Rush Foundation Hospital, Meridian, on July 6, 2018.

The honorary pallbearers were Brett Thompson, Daniel Nelson, Ken Nelson, Darryl Graves, Jonathan Hicks, and Charles Hathorn.

The active pallbearers were Ray Griffith, Howard Posey, Willie Buckley, Jr., Rodney Myers, Cedric Harper, Jeffrey Posey, Lawrence Hill and William Craig.

The flower bearers were friends and family.

Mr. Thompson attended Bassfield High School where he was an excellent student. He also enjoyed participating in sports, but preferred to write about the games. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, where he majored in Journalism.

After graduation, he worked for the Mount Vernon, Texas Herald Newspaper as the Lead Sports Writer; he also worked for the Mount Pleasant Tribune, Mount Pleasant, Texas.

Later he relocated to Greenville and was the Assistant Editor of the Delta Democrat. His last post was the Managing Editor at the Newton County Appeal Newspaper, Union. He had a love for reading, writing, music, debate and popular culture. His dream job was to work for ESPN, one day.

He was a lifelong member of Bassfield Pentecostal Church.

He was the grandson of paternal grandparents, Willie J. and Laura Thompson and Johnnie M.Buckley and maternal grandparents, Jesse and Althea Keys, all of Bassfield.

Survivors include his parents, Versie ad Geneva Thompson, Bassfield, and siblings, Carolyn Thompson and Tammy Thompson, both of Hattiesburg, Lisa Thompson, New Orleans, Louisiana, Martina Hicks (Jonathan), Little Elm, Texas and Darryl Graves, Byram; three nieces and one nephew and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
