Qualifying deadline is March 1

Qualifying for the 2019 county and state elections began Jan. 2. The
deadline is March 1 at 5 p.m.
The primary election will be Aug. 6, and the general election is Nov. 5.
Those running for county offices should qualify with the Jefferson
Davis County Circuit Clerk’s office and candidates for state offices
should qualify with the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office.
Candidates may qualify for the election as Democratic, Republican or
Independent. There is a $100 fee to qualify in county elections.
In order to run as an Independent candidate, an individual must also
submit a certified petition with signatures for county offices. Party
candidates do not require signatures.
Countywide positions that will be open include Sheriff, Chancery
Clerk, Circuit Clerk, Tax Assessor/Collector and Coroner. County
District positions on the ballot will include Supervisor, Justice
Court Judge and Constable.
Those qualifying for Jefferson Davis County Sheriff as of Tuesday are
Ron Strickland, Duane Dampier and Ricky Johnson.
JDC Circuit Clerk Clint Langley, Chancery Clerk Charlene Fairley and
Tax Assessor/Collector Kelley Ross-Brown are all qualified, but do not
have opponents to date.
John Wayne Tolar has qualified for JDC Coroner.
Michael Davis has qualified for Constable Post 1. For Justice Court
Judge, Ronnie Barnes and Ricky Barrett have qualified for Post 1;
Vernon Dampier and Calvin Graves for Post 2.
In the JDC Supervisors’ race, District 1 Corky Holliman and District 5
Bobby Rushing have no opponents.
District 2 candidates are Charles Reid and Joe Kerley. District 3
candidates are Alvin Arnold, Coleman Price and Joseph Mauldin.
District 4 candidates are Bobby Payne, Michael Evans, Troy Buckley and
Terry Mathis.
Current District 3 Supervisor John Thompson and current JDC Coroner
Jim Slater will not seek re-election.
The Jefferson Davis County Superintedent is now an appointed position
and will not be on the ballot.
