Funeral services were held Jan. 26, 2019, at Springhill M. B. Church
for Mrs. Mattie Jewel Berry, 85, who died Jan. 18, 2019, at Wesley
Hospital in Hattiesburg. Rev. Roy Thompson, pastor, officiated with
burial following in the church cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Mattie Jewel Berry was born to the late Charles and Alice Mae
Hall. She moved to St. Louis, California and later Gary, Indiana. She
was married to Reggie Berry. She worked at Inland Steel. She was a
member of New Mt. Olive Church in Gary, Indiana. She moved back to
Mississippi after retirement in 2001. Mrs. Berry joined Springhill M.
B. Church where she served until her health failed.
She was preceded in death by: husband, Reggie Berry; two brothers,
Charles and Alton; five sisters, Mary, Annie Jewel, Dorothy,
Earnestine and Angeline.
She is survived by: daughter, Terrell; grandson, Isiah both of
Mississippi; son, Roy (Gwen) Young of Bassfield; granddaughter, Keisha
of Texas; great-grandson, Keith Jr. of Texas; special niece, Libbie
Tillman; brother, George Nicholson; many other relatives and friends.
