Funeral services were held April 6, 2019, at Mt. Zion M. B. Church for
Mrs. Martha Jean Daggan, 77, who died April 1, 2019, at Jefferson
Davis Community Hospital.
Rev. Ozell White, pastor, officiated with burial following in the
Griffith Cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Martha Daggan was born to the late John and Peggy Gray in Prentiss.
She grew up in the Cedar Grove Community. She attended school at Cedar
Grove Elementary, Prentiss Institute and graduated from J. E. Johnson
High School in 1949.
After graduation she attended cosmetology school in Columbia. She
worked in many sewing factories and later became employed with The
Prentiss Regional Hospital in housekeeping where she retired.
She joined Mt. Zion M. B. Church where she was a member of the Usher
Board, Home Mission, Gospel Choir, Senior and Vocal Choir. She served
as Chief usher of the Jefferson Davis County Usher Union.  She was a
member of the Prentiss High Booster Club, AARP Group, NAACP, Heroine
of Jericho and the Mother Mary of the Palace of Children Court #186.
She loved attending Senior Site Center of Five County where she
participated in many activities.
She met and married the late Lonnie C. Bass Sr. of Carson and to this
union two sons were born, Bertram L. Bass and Lonnie C. (Angela) Bass
of Carson.
Mrs. Daggan later met and married the late Willie J. Daggan of
Monticello, and to this union three girls were born: Tangelia (Lloyd)
Reese of Prentiss, Terri Knight of Prentiss, and Tracey (Keith)
Fairley of Carson; two step-daughters, Mary Davis and Sandra Eley both
of Monticello.
She was preceded in death by: one son, Bertram Bass; three sisters,
Omega Avant, Doris Boyd and Bessie Collins; and one brother, Pertis
Watts.
She is survived by: aunt, Oddie M. Watts of Prentiss; five sisters,
Shirley (Buford) Graves of Bassfield, Carolyn (C. Allen) Hathorn of
Prentiss; Mary Watts of Orlando, Florida, Delois Berkhalter of
Prentiss and Lee Nettie (Goldsmith) Price of Prentiss; two brothers,
Larry (Lillie) Watts of Moss Point and Harry Watts of Prentiss; 16
grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and many
other relatives and friends.
