Funeral services were held May 11, 2019, at Jefferson Davis County
High School gymnasium for Mrs. Carolyn Faye Watts Hathon, 73, who died
May 4, 2019, at Forrest General Hospital, Hattiesburg. Rev. Ozell
White officiated with burial following in the Griffith Cemetery.
Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Carolyn Hathorn was born to the late John and Peggy Gray Watts in
Prentiss. She joined Mt. Zion M. B. Church and attended Prentiss First
Baptist Church, her family home church. She attended Cedar Grove
Elementary,  J. E. Johnson, Prentiss Junior College, Mississippi
Industrial College, Mississippi State and University of Southern
Mississippi where she received her degree.
Mrs. Hathorn was married to Mr. C. Allen Hathorn and two children were
born to this union.
She taught Language Arts at Alexander High School in Brookhaven and
later taught English and Drama at Bassfield High School, retiring in
2008 after 40 years. She had a full life serving as Girl Scout Leader
for 42 years, Sunday school teacher, secretary of Zion Spring Leaf 5th
Sunday Fellowship, District Congress and Convention, State Congress
and Convention, Oratorical Contest Assistant, Secretary of Jefferson
Davis County Usher Union and Vice President of the Democratic
Executive Committee in Jefferson Davis County.
Mrs. Hathorn was a member of the Jurisdiction of the State of
Mississippi Heroine of Jericho, served as the 13th District Ancient
Matron and Matron of Mt. Zion Court #186 in Prentiss and was a
volunteer with the American Red Cross.
She was a member of NAACP where she served as the Assistant Secretary,
Education and Scholarship committee Assistant, and chairperson of the
Martin Luther King Day Parade, delegate to the Mississippi State NAACP
Convention, delegate to Nation NAACP Convention and served on the
Executive Committee of the Jefferson Davis County Branch of the NAACP.
She was preceded in death by: brother, Pertiss (Johnell) Watts; four
sisters, Omega (Willie) Avant, Doris (Mose) Boyd, Bessie (F.B.)
Collins and Martha Daggan.
She is survived by: husband, Charles A. Hathorn of Prentiss, one
daughter, Sylvia (Elvadus) Hathorn of Prentiss; son, Terreo (Karen)
Hathorn of Monticello; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
four sisters, Shirley (Buford) Graves of Bassfield, Mary Watts of
Orlando, Florida, Delois Berkhalter of Prentiss, and Lee Nettie
(Goldsmith) Price of Prentiss; two brothers, Larry (Lilly) Watts of
Moss Point, and Harry Watts of Prentiss; and goddaughter, D’metria
Booth of Bassfield; and many other relatives and friends.
