H. D. Broome

Funeral services with Military Honors for Mr. H.D. Broome were held at
2 p.m. on May 14, 2019, at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. Mr. Broome died
May 11, 2019, at his residence near Bassfield. Rev. Dewitt Baine and
Rev. Ed Steele officiated. Burial was in the Lowland Cemetery.
Saulters Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Hall Bell, James Boleware, Jonathan Williams, Jerrett
Williams, Justin Magee and Tom Williams.
H.D. Broome was born on April 8, 1926, in Bassfield to Anderson and
Lola Hatten Broome. He was a retired maintenance foreman for MDOT.
Mr. Broome was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Army, having served
in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned a Bronze Star and a Purple
Heart.
His Life Motto was “If you don’t have the Lord, you don’t have
anything.” He was quick to share his testimony of accepting Jesus as
his Savior on the battlefield.
He was a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of Mt.
Gilead Baptist Church.
Mr. Broome was preceded in death by his mother and father; his wife of
63 years, Gracie Williams Broome; four sisters, Gladys Mae Bell, Hazel
Ray Allen, Louise Polk, and Doris Thompson; a brother-in-law, Glynn
Williams (Faye).
Survivors include his son, Darrell Broome (Sara) of Bassfield; two
grandsons, Joshua Broome and Drew Broome, both of Bassfield; three
brother-in-laws, Hubert Williams (Helen) of Petal; Shelton Williams
(Sue) of Castro Valley, California; and J.C. Williams (Janice) of
Ellisville; one sister-in-law, Lizzie Greer (J.V.) of Columbia; as
well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation was 5:30 p.m.  until 8 p.m. May 13, 2019, at Saulters
Funeral Home. There was a visitation on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until
service time at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.
