Strickland, Dampier continue in sheriff’s race

Shortly before midnight, the stage was set for celebration for those that gathered fifty percent plus one of the votes cast in the August primary, and more campaigning for others.

Ron Strickland and Duane “Slim” Dampier will face off in the August primary Sheriff run-off.

Strickland received 1,451 votes to Dampier’s 828. The winner of the primary run-off will face Henry Allen McCullum in the November  general election.

Dedra Johnson is the new Jefferson Davis County Coroner receiving 2,565 votes. Her opponent, John Wayne Tolar, received 1,068 votes.

In the Justice Court Judge Post 1 race, Ronnie Barnes defeated Ricky Barrett 1,071 votes to 721. Barnes will face Jurtyne Reimonez Youngblood in the November general election.

There will be a run-off for the Post 2 position between Calvin Graves and Vernon Dampier. Graves received 880 votes; Dampier received 696.

Harold Rhodes will continue as the Post 2 Constable defeating Johnnie “Bankie” Easterling 1,179 votes to 581.

In the Supervisors’ race, Charles Reid is the primary winner for District 2 and Bobby Rushing is the primary winner for District 5.

Reid will face independent candidate Joe Kerley in the general election. Rushing will face Willie Williams in November.

There will be a run-off for District 3 supervisor. Demarrio “Casper” Booth will face Coleman Price. Booth received 285 votes to Price’s 150.

There will also be a run-off in District 4 between Michael Evans and Terry “Red” Mathis.

Evans received 227 votes. Mathis received 343.

Macon “Corky” Holliman was unopposed and will remain the District 1 Supervisor.

The Circuit Clerk, Chancery Clerk and Tax Assessor were all unopposed, as was Post 1 Constable.

The primary run-off will be held Aug. 27.

Absentee voting will take place as soon as the results are official and ballots are printed.

Totals below include machine and absentee ballots. There are 17 affidavit ballots that are not included in the totals.
