Members of JDC 4-H met with the board of supervisors at their bi-monthly meeting Monday morning to discuss National 4-H Week.

National 4-H week is Oct. 6-12 and is a week dedicated to letting the community know what 4-H is and what they have to offer.

4-H programs are available through local 4-H clubs, 4-H camps and  in-school and after-school programs.

With the support of adult mentors, youth select from a menu of hands-on project ideas to complete.

4-H programs are available for children ages 5-18. 4-H Cloverbud programs are available for children ages 5-7. Junior 4-H is for ages 8-13. Senior 4-H is for ages 14-18.

4-H programs are grounded in the belief that kids learn best by doing. Kids complete hands-on projects in areas like science, health, agriculture and civic engagement, in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles.

Kids can concentrate on one focus area or they can try a variety of programs throughout their 4-H experience.

Regardless of the project area, all 4-H programs include mentoring and career readiness as core elements.

Community clubs in Jefferson Davis County are the Mt. Carmel Club and gardening club, Project based clubs are shooting sports, 4-H public speaking and presentation and nutrition education. Clubs are year-round and are formed based on the engagement and interest of the kids.

“We also have robotics and STEM club,” said Latonya Ramsey of the county MSU Extension Service.

Approximately 65 youth in Jefferson Davis County are registered in the Mississippi State University Extension service registry as 4-Hers in Jefferson Davis County.

“As a kid grows up in 4-H, they become ambassadors for 4-H. As they show that profile at the high school level, it begins to help them with possible scholarships and interest from Mississippi State.”

“Every college in the State of Mississippi recognizes the 4-H component of that child’s life as being a great endeavor.”

“We have all these different opportunities available for our youth in the commuity. It’s not just livestock anymore. We have grown.”
