Graveside services were held Friday, Aug. 14, 2020 at Hollisday Creek M. B. Church, Carson, Mississippi for Mrs. Johnnie Mae Barnes, 91, who died Monday, Aug. 10, 2020 at

Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg..

Rev. Robert Minor officiated with Johnson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnnie Mae Barnes was born to the late Lemmel and John Black in Sontag where she was a member of Mt. Zion M. B. Church.

She received her Bachelor of Theology from Mississippi Baptist Seminary and held an office in the Mississippi Baptist Seminary and held an office in the National Baptist Association.

Mrs. Barnes joined Hollisday Creek after marriage to her husband, the late Major Barnes.

She was a member of the usher board, women’s mission, youth advisement, Baptist training course (BTU), and the drill team. She was a Headstart teacher and bus driver at Sophia Sutton Mission Assembly for over 24 years until she retired.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Zelma Ewing, three children; Joanne Davis, Jerome Davis and Symerron Butler; three grandchildren, Marcus Butler, Felix Butler and Christopher Davis; one great-grandchild, Phelix Butler and special nephew, Larry Black.

She is survived by sister, Etherine Moore; five children, Gloria Kendrick of Jackson; Mae L. Knight of Bassfield and Lynn Wade of Jackson; Tracy (Kim) Barnes of New Orleans, Louisiana and Sammy (Cornelius) Blackmon of Greenwood; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Shirley Joe Evans; three children, Anissa Evans, Derrick Evans both of Monticello; Denise (Kendrick) Vanison of Silver Creek; five grandchildren, Derrick Evans Jr. and  Romel Evans both of Atlanta, Georgia; Alise Promis of Monticello; Kenyon Vanison and Kameron Vanison of Silver Creek and many other relatives and friends.
