Congratulations to Katelyn Chandler (left), who won 1st place in the Family & Consumer Sciences Visual Presentation contest and Zya Walker (right) who won 2nd place in the Family & Consumer Sciences Visual Presentation contest during the SE District State 4-H Congress in Hattiesburg. Katelyn is a 10th grader at Jefferson Davis County High School who plays trombone in the high school band. Katelyn has been in 4-H for seven years and is a 4-H JMWV (Junior Master Wellness Volunteer). Zya is a 9th grader at JDCHS and plays forward for the JDC girls basketball, and short stop for the the JDC girls fast pitch softball team. Zya has been in 4-H for five years. Both have won numerous awards at the local and district level, and this was their first time competing on the state level. These 4- H’ers will receive monetary premiums. We hope to see Zya represent JDC 4-H for 1st place in 2022 and we welcome all Senior 4-H’ers ages 14-18 to be a part of next year’s State 4-H Congress. All 1st place winners receive an invitation to attend the Cooperative Leadership Conference held on the campus of Mississippi State University. The conference is an overnight event where 4-H’ers get to stay in the dorms on campus, make new friends, and enjoy fun nights. However, best of all, 4-H’ers learn about what a business cooperative is, how they benefit the communities, and job opportunities in the cooperatives such as electric, retail, and service co-ops. They take to a trip to the MS Delta to hear presentations from some of Mississippi’s leading cooperatives and tour their businesses. Katelyn attended this year’s cooperative conference for winning 1st place in her contest category.
