Prentiss Mayor Charley Dumas and Bassfield Mayor Angie Ladner held the second meeting of the Jefferson Davis County Mayors’ Youth Council this month. Participants were sworn in by Mayor Ladner before discussing duties and possible fundraising events.
As part of the Mississippi Municipal League, a Mayor’s Youth Council is a group of young people working toward the common purpose of developing their individual leadership skills to strengthen their communities through volunteer service and increased communication with municipal leaders. Youth develop and lead initiatives with the support of the adult mentors.
Students from Jefferson Davis County High School and Prentiss Christian School were chosen to make up the group. The students and their parents and guardians met for the first time earlier this month with Mayors Dumas and Ladner.
The group will began fundraising as soon as possible to pay for the statewide Summit held at one of the universities each year. Fundraising efforts will also pay for educational trips for the group, such as a trip to the State Capital during the legislative session in the spring. Along with these trips, the mayors would like the council’s input on improvements throughout the community. If you are interested in donating to the council, please contact Prentiss or Bassfield City Hall.
