The Board of Aldermen for the Town of Prentiss met for the second February meeting at Prentiss City Hall on Feb. 15. Aldermen in attendance were Willie Davis, Moochie Speights, Randy Stamps and Patty King. First on the agenda was the request for zoning variance for the residence at the corner of Third Street and Mississippi Avenue across from Prentiss Presbyterian Church.

Rhonda Phillips presented the board with a plan at the January meeting for an adult service center at that location. Phillips was seeking to have a home that could serve as an adult day service center for predominately the elderly and Veterans, as well as others that need some sort of service. Those that might benefit from the program would be older adults that need assistance getting to the grocery store, doctors’ appointments or picking up necessities. A public hearing for a zoning variance for this property was held Feb. 1 with one member of the neighborhood in attendance expressing concerns regarding the variance.

The board voted unanimously to deny the variance.

The board approved minutes and claims before the February departmental reports were given and the meeting was adjourned.

Prentiss Police Department report:

• Responded to 85 escorts, 92 complaints, 12 alarms, eight arrests, 13 citations and six accidents.
• Assisted the Mississippi Highway Patrol with the investigation of the high speed chase and shooting incident on Harper Road.
• Worked break-ins at the Exxon and Hudson Drugs.
• The department’s case against Eric Jones was tried in Circuit Court.

Prentiss Fire Department report:

• Responded to 10 emergency calls, two house fires, two trailer fires, two motor vehicle accidents, one car fire, one medical call, one grass fire and one oil well fire.
• Performed inspections at Jefferson Davis Community Hospital and the Extended Care Facility.
• Began Level I training for the county’s volunteer firefighters. An average of 12 firefighters attended the training.

Public Works report:

• 7,652,000 gallons of water was pumped, 4,371,000 gallons were sold.
• Repaired the storm drain at the new county building.
• Replaced 14 meters and cut-off valves.
• Fixed water leak and unclogged sewer at J. E. Johnson.
• Repaired sewer line collapse on Magnolia Circle.
• Fixed water leak at the corner of 4^th Street and Mississippi Avenue.
• Read water meters, picked up limbs and leaves, trash and garbage and cleaned storm drains. Repaired brakes on the water truck and serviced the lawnmowers.
