Beautiful morning for second annual Good Friday Remembrance Walk

It was a beautiful morning for the Prentiss Fire Department’s second annual Good Friday Remembrance Walk this morning. This, of course, is in remembrance of the walk Jesus Christ took on his way to be crucified. All surrounding first responders and community members were welcomed to participate. The walk began at the Ronald Wayne Jones Memorial Complex on Hwy. 184 in and traveled down Columbia Avenue through Prentiss. A large wooden cross was carried throughout the walk. “I would like to thank everyone who came out this morning and participated in the second annual Remembrance Walk,” said event organizer Michael Davis. “A special thanks to the Mayor and Prentiss Board of Alderman for allowing us to do this, as well as the Prentiss Police Department, Jefferson Davis County Sheriff’s Office, Prentiss Fire Chief Wayne Bass and Sheriff Ron Strickland.
According to Davis, the group was larger this year than last. He hopes to continue to grow the event by increasing the route down the bypass back to the police station and even adding a pancake breakfast fundraiser. The route ends now at the former Country Fisherman on the north end of town.
“My goal was to bring awareness to Easter Sunday,” said Davis. “I know the kids enjoy hunting eggs and the Easter Bunny, but I wanted to start this to bring remembrance of what this weekend is all about.” Davis was excited to see the youth from Carson Baptist Church walking this morning. “They could have been home and in bed and enjoying their day off from school, but they came out and decided to be a part of something special.” Davis is Captain of the Prentiss Fire Department, the Post 1 Jefferson Davis County Constable, a part-time deputy with the sheriff’s department and a volunteer for Good Hope Fire Department.
Volunteer fireman Roydale Barnes has participated both years. “I was looking forward to doing it again this year, said Barnes. “It is a very meaningful time.”
“I really enjoyed it,” said Bassfield Alderwoman Lisa Blount who was walking with a group from L. L. Roberts United Methodist Church in Bassfield. “It is the reason for the season and was a moving experience.”
District 1 Elections Commissioner Linda Speights said, “It was an enjoyable walk for a good cause.”
Prentiss Town Clerk Missy Jones thanked the elected officials and everyone that came out and participated as did Prentiss Mayor Charley Dumas. “Thanks to everyone who took part in the Prentiss Fire Department’s second annual Good Friday Remembrance Walk,” said Dumas. “Wishing everyone a Happy Easter weekend from the Town of Prentiss.”
