Supervisors break ground on new jail site

The Jefferson Davis County Board of Supervisors met May 16 for the second meeting of the month.

After prayer by Jefferson Davis County Tax Assessor Kelly Ross Brown, the agenda was approved.

County engineer Les Dungan presented a quote to upgrade the electrical system at the ballfields at John Thomson Sports Complex in Bassfield. Buckhaults Electric Service will be providing the repairs.

David Marsh of Benchmark Construction Corporation discussed the progress of the new detention center in Prentiss. The board officially broke ground on the four-acre site after the meeting concluded. Completion of the new jail will be sometime in 2023.

In other board news, the board approved the following without opposition before the board went into executive session and the meeting was adjourned:

  • Approved minutes.
  • Approved renewal of lease on Skating Rink Building with Rudolph Foods.
  • Approved continuation of reduction of rent for Five County Child Development Building.
  • Approved renewal of agreement for collection services with Southern Financial Systems
  • and Justice Court.
    Approved school bus turnarounds in District 2 at 520 Alex Daley Road and 58 Burkett Road and District 3 at 25 Carter Lane, 23 Zula Lane and 298 Hosey Mikell Road.
    Approved obtaining independent elevator inspector for courthouse and jail.
  • Approved advertising for cold mix – current bid expires June 30.
  • Approved purchase clerk obtaining quotes for electric gate at District 3 barn.
  • Approved revising order from Jan. 18 on repairs to District 4 garbage truck.
  • Approved transfer of inventory from District 5 to District 1: Asset #1642 – 1992 GMC water truck.
  • Approved transfer of inventory District 5 to District 3: Asset #362 – 2004 Chevrolet garbage truck; District 5 to Maintenance: Asset 2300 – 2019 10-foot utility trailer.
  • Approved employees attending meetings and conventions.
  • Approved Employee Action Forms – District 3
  • Approved spreading into minutes Employee Action Forms – Circuit Clerk’s Office & Sheriff’s Department
  • Approved acceptance of funds from State Treasurer for unclaimed property – $832.29 (Aflac of Columbus).
  • Approved payment of invoices: South MS Planning & Development – $5,875.00 (senior citizen services).
  • Approved dues to the MS Association of County Board Attorneys for JDC’s Board Attorney – $100.00.
  • Approved claims.
