Hattiesburg Clinic would like to congratulate Laura J. Miller, MD, for receiving the 2022 Medical Early Career Achievement Award from the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine Alumni Board.

Dr. Miller is a physician at Hattiesburg Clinic Prentiss Family Practice Clinic. She is a member of the Mississippi State Medical Association (MSMA), where she participated in the 2021-2022 MSMA Physician Leadership Academy and also serves on the MSMA Council for Finance and Budget and the Council on Medical Education.

At Hattiesburg Clinic, she serves on the Health Care Policy Committee, the Marketing & Communications Committee and the Value-Based Care Committee. Miller is also Chief of Staff at Jefferson Davis Community Hospital in Prentiss.

Miller joined Hattiesburg Clinic in October of 2020, just as COVID-19 testing protocols were being developed across the clinic. She was able to establish and implement testing and treatment for Prentiss Family Practice Clinic. This, along with her involvement in MSMA and familiarity with public health guidance, gained media coverage that helped her reach people across Mississippi and beyond.

Her time with Prentiss Family Practice Clinic has also reaffirmed her passion for practicing family medicine and providing care for rural Mississippi.

“Prentiss is a small town, and I have spent a lot of time ‘connecting the dots’ with so many of my patients,” Miller said. “I have talked to churches about COVID-19 and run across town in the middle of a busy clinic week to do sports physicals for our local school. I have also traveled gravel roads to see some of my homebound patients in their environment.”

It is this drive and passion that earned Miller the 2022 Medical Early Career Achievement Award. This award honors an accomplished young alumna/alumnus who has made outstanding contributions to the health care field within 15 years of receiving their medical degree.

Miller was nominated for the award by one of her medical students from UMMC, where she has served as a preceptor since 2014.

She also serves as a preceptor for the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

“I am extremely honored to have been chosen for the 2022 Medical Early Career Achievement Award,” Miller said. “I attribute so much of this to my physician mentors, who have provided guidance and answers along the way for me. I am thankful now for the collegial atmosphere at Hattiesburg Clinic and look forward to serving patients in this area in all of my roles for years to come.”
