Jo Ann Hartzog was born on Aug. 17, 1940, in Silver Creek, to Clarence and Ellen Robertson Sanders.  After graduating high school, Jo Ann finished her education at Copiah Lincoln (Co-Lin) Junior College and William Carey College.  She and her late husband, Harrell, owned and operated the Silver Creek Grocery for many years.  In addition, they also owned the Silver Creek Shell Station, formerly operated as Sanders Pure Oil by Jo Ann’s parents.  After retirement, because of her love for people, Jo Ann once again found herself in the grocery business, where she enjoyed the day-to-day interaction with her customers.

For over two decades, Harrell and Jo Ann served as the mayor and first lady of Silver Creek.  Whether it was her weekly trips to the beauty shop or visiting over a good cup of coffee while rocking on the porch, Jo Ann’s life revolved around her many friends of Silver Creek.

“Mime” will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren as being a great and engaging storyteller. She had the gift of transporting those in her audience to a simpler time growing up in Silver Creek or the fun times of a young girl attending Co-Lin and William Carey College.  Her “larger than life” personality will be missed by her friends and family alike.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Harrell Hartzog, a son, Steven Wayne Hartzog and her parents, Clarence and Ellen Sanders.

Her memory will forever be cherished by her daughter, Stacy (David) Davis of Hattiesburg and two grandsons, Tyler Davis and Connor Hartzog.  Mrs. Hartzog also leaves behind a host of friends and cousins.
