Rev. Jimmy Gerald McGee was born on Sept. 12, 1936, in Jackson, to Davis Astor and Florene Buckley McGee.  “Brother Jimmy”, as he was affectionately known by the many that loved him, graduated from Prentiss High School and enrolled in Mississippi College, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree.  Afterwards, he enrolled in the New Orleans Theological Seminary to further his ministerial education.  Bro. Jimmy was a student of God’s Word and he, along with his wife, spent many years in the service of the Lord.  While in Seminary, Bro. Jimmy served the congregation of Old Silver Creek Baptist Church.  After finishing Seminary, his very first pastorate was at the Old Hebron Baptist Church.  After serving at Old Hebron, the McGee family would find themselves doing the work of the Lord in the Mississippi Delta at the Arcola Baptist Church and serving as Assistant Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Greenville.  In 1968, Bro. Jimmy was called to serve as Pastor of the East McComb Baptist Church for 12 years until assuming the pastorate of the First Baptist Church of Grenada, in 1980, where he remained for several years.  Bro. Jimmy’s final pastorate was in Monticello, where he served the congregation of the Monticello Baptist Church until his retirement.

After moving back to Jefferson Davis County, Bro. Jimmy built a beautiful home in Prentiss, which he and his beloved wife, Catherine, enjoyed during their retirement years.  Bro. Jimmy also liked to hunt, fish and was skilled at working with his hands, especially woodworking. Even after retirement, he continued to help his community by serving with the Lily Rose Water Association.

In addition, he and his wife loved to travel in their camper.  Over the years, they were privilege to visit 48 of the 50 United States of America, where they involved themselves in mission work. Described as a “real family man”, Bro. Jimmy especially looked forward to traveling to the Northwestern part of the United States with his wife to visit their sons. He considered this part of the United States as a place of adventure where many happy memories were made hiking in the mountains, trot lining for catfish and crabbing with his sons.  Bro. Jimmy served his Lord, his family and his fellow man and will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Bro. Jimmy was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Catherine McGee.

His memory will forever be cherished by his wife of 64 years, Mary Catherine Sansing McGee of Prentiss; two sons, Richard McGee (Rhonda) of Snohomish, Washington, William Randal McGee (Lori) of Portland, Oregon; two brothers, Harold Davis McGee of Laurel, John William McGee of Prentiss.  The legacy of their Granddaddy Mac will also live on through his grandchildren, Katie McGee Gaynier, Carley Brice McGee, Kirsten McGee Larsen, Graeme McGee; his great-grandchildren, William Graynier, Maggie Graynier and one expected great-grandchild.
