The National Weather Service in Jackson has indicated there will be extremely dangerous heat conditions this week in Jefferson Davis County.
The county is in the Significant Risk category for Monday through Wednesday with high temps remaining in the upper 90s. Heat stroke is increasingly likely with prolonged outdoor activity.
Thursday and Friday our area will be in the Extreme Risk. High temps will be in the upper 90s to near 100s for several days. Heat indices will reach 111 to 115 degrees and heat stroke is eminent with prolonged outdoor activity.
Those working outdoors should stay hydrated and take frequent breaks.
Danny Martin with Longleaf Heating and Air recommends keeping window shades closed, keeping ceiling fans running on low and turning off all unnecessary lighting to relieve stress off air conditioning units. “Try to keep your thermostat settings within a 2-3 degree range,” said Martin.
For example, an occupied home thermostat to be set at 73 degrees and when unoccupied at 76 degrees.
“This keeps the unit from having to work as hard. Remember, your central A/C unit not only conditions the air, but also conditions all surfaces in the home, walls, furniture, etc.”
