Burn ban in effect for Jefferson Davis County

Published 4:29 am Saturday, August 12, 2023

A burn ban has been issued by the Prentiss Board of Aldermen and the Jefferson Davis County Board of Supervisors effective immediately.  The ban will expire at midnight Sept. 5, at which time conditions will be evaluated and acted upon accordingly.

Anything with an open flame that produces an ember is prohibited during a burn ban. This includes campfires, bonfires, fire pits, fire rings, burn barrels, debris burning and field burning.

According to the Mississippi Forestry Commission, the wind can carry floating embers away from the original fire and start a spot fire up to one-half mile away from the burning area.

Please report any violations, grass fires or other burns to the Prentiss Fire Department at 601-792-5198 or the Jefferson Davis County Sheriff’s Department at 601-792-5169.
