An open house was held March 22 for the new Jefferson Davis County Sheriff’s Department substation in Bassfield.
The substation is located at the Dr. Frank L. Leggett Public Library on General Robert E. Blount Drive in Bassfield.
The station houses Undersheriff Evan Price and his new office.
The Bassfield Police Department was closed in 2013 due to budget constraints. The JDC Sheriff’s Department covered the area, but there has not been an office there in 11 years.
The establishment of the Bassfield substation signifies a commitment to enhancing law enforcement services in the area.
Jefferson Davis County Economic Development Director and Basfield resident Gary Bass said it was a proud moment to see.
“I am grateful to the sherriff for facilitating this as part of his commitment to the towns inter-local agreement and I am also grateful to the mayor and her tenacity to make Bassfield feel and look safe and secure again,” said Bass.
Officials hope that just having an active police presence in town will stop a lot of the speeding down main street and drugs in the park and parking lots.
“I hope people realize that the future of Bassfield depends on everyone though; the undersheriff and the mayor can’t do it alone,” Bass said.
Bass encourages everyone to stop by the substation and introduce themselves to Price.
“Let him know who you are and find out how you can support making Bassfield a safe, secure place to live and work.”
