Graveside services were held Saturday, November 29, 2014, at Progress MB Church Cemetery, Bassfield, MS for Mr. Cleveland Henderson, Jr., age 87, who died Friday, November 14, at G.V. Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center, Jackson, MS. Rev. Tyrone McLaurin officiated with interment following. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cleveland Henderson, Jr. was born to the late Cleveland and Lillie Mae Henderson in Brookhaven, MS. He was a member of New Hope MB Church in Jackson, where he served on the usher board for many years.

He attended Tougaloo High School in Tougaloo, MS. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a World War II Veteran. He received the World War II Victory Medal and Occupation Medal while in Germany.

After serving in the military, he attended and graduated from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education.

Mr. Henderson began his coaching career at Carver High School in Bassfield. He also taught and coached at Hazlehurst High School and Oakley Training School. Later in his career, he became a barber opening his own shop in Bassfield, MS.

He met Minnie L. Booth in 1957 and they were married in 1959; four children were born to this union, Faye, Ava, Benjamin and Marcus.

A grandchild, Fabian, preceded him in death.

His survivors include wife, Minnie L. Henderson; children, Faye L. Oatis of Bassfield, MS; Ava D. Henderson of Redwood, City, CA, Benjamin Henderson of Hattiesburg, MS, and Marcus (Shelia) Henderson of Clinton, MS; Cindy Richardson and Marvin Henderson both of Jackson, MS; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Vernon (Shirley) Henderson of Grambling, LA; and close cousin, Velma Henderson of Jackson, MS.
