The Jefferson Davis County School Board voted at their monthly meeting
Monday night to seek the help of the Mississippi School Boards
Association in their search for the next JDC superintendent.
According to the MSBA, it tailors every search to meet individual
school district and community needs.
“Our experienced superintendent search consultants have decades of
school board and administrative experience. They know how school
boards operate and can advise local boards regarding options for
finding the right person for the district.”
Once the options are presented, all decisions regarding how the search
process will be conducted will be made by the local board.
Several board members expressed concerns over the cost of the service.
“The prices vary and that will depend on the things we would like for
them to assist with,” said board president Von Norwood.
“There is no one on this board that is qualified or has the time to go
through this process. We need help. We need to get this ball rolling.”
“I want to make it clear that we are not voting to hire them to assist
us,” said board member Terri Stamps.
“I want them to come present our options and the costs associated and
then we will discuss it and make a decision that is best for our
county.”
“We are not entering a formal contract,” said Norwood.
The motion passed for MSBA to make a presentation to the JDC school
board regarding their options in the superintendent search.
A representative from M3A Architecture out of Jackson presented the
school board at a work session on Feb. 14, with a plan to
repair/modify all three schools in Jefferson Davis County.
The original plan was to build a new high school in Carson. The school
bond issue, which would partially fund the construction, failed
without receiving the necessary 60 percent.
The current plan would cost a total of $9,881,540.
Three million would be allocated for repairs at J.E. Johnson
Elementary in Prentiss.
G.W. Carver in Bassfield would receive roughly $200,000.
Jefferson Davis High School would remain at its current location in
Bassfield and receive the remaining $5 million plus for repairs and
modifications.
No board action is taken at work sessions, only at official school
board meetings.

“M3A plan to move forward on proposed project, do I have a motion,”
said Norwood.
Board member Bobby Wilson made the motion to approve. There was no
second. Motion died for lack of second.
“I hope ya’ll know what you’re doing to our schools,” said Wilson.
“We need a superintendent before we need a building,” said Stamps.
