Prentiss High back on winning streak

By Malik Gardner/PHS sports

Prentiss High basketball teams have been struggling lately. Coming into the week, girls and boys were on a three-game losing streak. Due to bad weather, snow and ice, the game scheduled with McLaurin on Tuesday was postponed until Saturday. They would travel to St. Andrews on Friday.

The girls’ game was a blowout from the beginning. Prentiss was leading by 15 points at the half. Joy Powell and Myyah West would lead Prentiss to a 60-24 victory.

Joy Powell – 15 points

The boys’ game would be much closer in the beginning than expected. The score was only 9-5 after the first quarter. The boys would take control in the second quarter going into the half with a ten-point lead. Prentiss would come out after halftime a lot more aggressive on defense. They only gave up 12 points in the whole second half. Prentiss cruised to victory 57-26.

James Hawthorne – 16 points

Tashaderick Collins – 11 points

On Saturday, Prentiss went to play the McLaurin Tigers. Prentiss girls looked to win this game without one of their best players Myyah West. The girls would not miss a beat even though they started the game with sloppy play. After halftime, the Lady Bulldogs took the game to another level, winning 48-26.

Alexus Williams – 19 points, 5 steals

Joy Powell – 15 points

The Boys’ game would be intriguing from the beginning, controlling the first quarter. After careless turnovers and bad shots, McLaurin would take the lead going into halftime 27-26. Prentiss would dominate the second half behind James Hawthorne with three dunks. Although McLaurin would make a late push, the bulldogs would score eight unanswered points to close the game.

James Hawthorne – 19 points

Chauncey Baggett – 16 points

Prentiss boys and girls are now on a two game winning streak. The girls are now 4-4 in district, and the boys are 5-3 in district. PHS plays Velma Jackson on Tuesday and Florence on Friday.
